View Services Using a Port

Sometimes you need to view which processes are using a port.  You might need this, for example, if you want to figure out why your webserver is not starting on port 80.

Run this command:

sudo netstat -plant | grep 80

You should see output that looks something like this:

tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:443 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 80715/nginx: master
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 80715/nginx: master
tcp6 0 0 :::443 :::* LISTEN 80715/nginx: master
tcp6 0 0 :::80 :::* LISTEN 80715/nginx: master

If you’re troubleshooting why NGINX or OLS not starting and throwing BINDING errors on port 80 or 443 AND you see any mention of another service such as apache in the list that would most likely be the reason you’re having issues.
